Na Gaeil Notes Monday March 20th 2017
Seniors Na Gaeil entertained Fossa in Round 1 of the Division 3 County League in Killeen on Sunday afternoon last. Fossa opted to play with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half but it was Na Gaeil that got off to the better start scoring the first two points through Seán Herlihy and Mike Griffin. But Fossa quickly found their rhythm with Tadhg O’Shea scoring two and the newly wed Fintan Coffey scoring one. Then Donal O’ Sullivan had the ball in the net for Fossa to leave the score Fossa: 1-03; Na Gaeil: 0-02 after 12 minutes. Donal O’Sullivan and Mike Griffin exchanged points before Fintan Coffey put over two more for Fossa. Seamie O’Neill scored for Na Gaeil on 25 minutes followed by a good point from Fossa’s no. 7 Dara O’Keeffe. Na Gaeil’s Diarmaid Herlihy scored the last point of the half to leave the score at the interval Fossa: 1-07; Na Gaeil: 0-05.
Na Gaeil now had the breeze at their backs for the 2nd half and scored early from the boot of Ian McCarthy. Fossa replied with a good point on 13 minutes from their midfielder Matt Rennie. On 18 minutes Na Gaeil got a crucial score when midfielder Stefan Okunbor cut through Fossa’s defence to put the ball in the back of the net. This reduced the deficit to 2 points. Diarmaid Herlihy put one over for Na Gaeil to leave the minimum between the sides. But the Fossa players composed themselves with Mike O’Shea and Darragh Rice scoring two nice points to put them three in front with 6 minutes left. It looked like Fossa’s day.
But Na Gaeil never gave up. Ian McCarthy floated a ball into the square which was fielded by Dan O’Connor. As he turned to shoot he was upended in the square. Ian McCarthy cooly dispatched the resultant penalty to the net to tie the game on 28 minutes. Both sides had chances to win the game but failed to do so. Final score Fossa: 1-10; Na Gaeil: 2-07.
Even though things were going against them Na Gaeil never gave up and fought back to earn a well deserved draw. Kieran Dineen and Kieran Donovan were excellent in defence. Stefan gave a solid performance at midfield while Ian McCarthy and Diarmaid Herlihy were impressive up front.
Na Gaeil: Timmy Culloty, Colm Lyons, Kieran Dineen, Dylan Brazil, Rob Murphy, Eoin Doody Kieran Donovan, Dan O’Connor, Stefan Okunbor(1-0), Seamie O’Neill(0-1), Ian McCarthy(1-01, Seán Herlihy(0-01), Mike Griffin(0-02), Jamie Lowham, Diarmaid Herlihy(0-02). Minors Na Gaeil played their 1st round County League Division 1 match away to Laune Rangers on St Patrick’s Day and picked up two valuable points for their efforts in a tough and close encounter. Played in terrible conditions on very heavy rain sodden pitch both teams tried hard and played with commitment and determination. There were solid performances from many on the day and all the players showed good character and effort which pleased management. There is plenty to work on but considering the conditions it is great to come out of a tight game with a win. Final Score Na Gaeil: 0-9; Laune Rangers: 1-05. Well done to all involved and especially to the younger players performing at this level. Keep up the good work lads. Next game is away to Austin Stacks on Saturday March 25th next in what will be a very tough assignment. Training continues as normal and all panel players are asked to attend.

Na Gaeil Ladies Na Gaeil Ladies v Dr Crokes, Round 1 County League Div 2
We played on Sunday morning in Killeen in dry conditions. Meagan got us an early point with Crokes replying with 2 points. Kate Anne made a great run from the backs to score a goal to give us the lead. Clodagh Mc Hugh, Brid and Kate Anne got another point apiece. Mags created a couple of chances to help Meagan score another 2 points. Mairin gave a great pass to Caoimhe to score a goal just before half time. With Susan, Eimear and Martina keeping tight in the full back line, we stopped Crokes from scoring any more in the 1st half. Nora and Jadyn were winning the midfield battle and with Brid, Deirdre and Sarah defencively strong in the half back line, we were controlling the game. Dearbhla and Mary came on with Clodagh O’Connor and Caragh coming into defence. Caragh and Mary combined well to get Mary a goal. Deirdre found Dearbhla with a long range pass for her to fire the ball over the bar. Meagan got another point before Brid finished off our scoring with a fisted pass over the bar. A good performance for the start of the year with Aine in particular having a great game in goals. Final Score 3.09 to 0.04

Scór na bPáistí The county semi final of Scór na bPáistí was held in Castleisland on Saturday week last March 11th and the club was well represented by Aisling Casey who gave a beautiful rendition of Isle of Hope in the Amhránaíocht Aonair Competition. Unfortunately Aisling didn't make it through to the next round but she's still young and we have high hopes for her going forward in the future. Scór is finished for this year. Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way, all the mentors who give freely of their time to prepare the participants for the various Scór competitions, Sean and the clubhouse staff who are so accommodating to us and all our wonderful kids who are always bursting with enthusiasm! Le Cúnamh Dé beimid ar ais arís i Mí Dheireadh Fómhair.
Congratulations to former Na Gaeil player Darragh O’Connell of Abbeydorney on a magnificent display in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day. He starred at midfield for Dublin club Cuala in the All Ireland Club Hurling Final against Ballyea of Clare, scoring three points from play. His display deservedly won him the Man of the Match award. It is a dream come true for Darragh and a great day for his family also. Hopefully he will pay a visit to Na Gaeil with the Tommy Moore Cup before the year is out.
Heartiest Congratulations to Killarney club Dr. Crokes on a fantastic victory in the All Ireland Club Football Final in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day, defeating Slaughtneil of Derry by two points.
